Bandundu Practical School

The children of unemployed parents often cannot attend school, and as a result the children often end up on the streets, in prostitution and/or in early marriage. Often the girls become mothers at an early age. In addition, the young people who do complete an education often cannot find a job in Bandundu Ville. It is also common that it is not possible to continue studying because further education is not available in the area. It is often not financially possible to continue the education in the capital city of Kinshasa. There are also many people with disabilities who do not work and do not have the opportunity to pursue an education. There used to be government support for hearing-impaired and deaf people for study opportunities but this has been dropped.

To improve this situation, a practical school will be able to contribute greatly. By learning a profession that the young people can immediately start working in, unemployment will be significantly reduced. Promoting the economic development of the rural population through the application of (new) techniques and technologies is therefore central to the project. This is to help the rural poor and unemployed improve their food security, increase their income and strengthen their resilience. The project also contributes to the self-reliance of girls and women as they work toward financial independence. This gives them more control over their own lives and more freedom of choice.

To realize the project, the Esengo Foundation sought cooperation with a local organization. This organization is called CENTRE D’APPUI TECHNIQUE POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT RURAL
(CATDR) and is a local NGO. CATDR has carried out previous projects in cooperation with UNICEF. This collaboration grew out of the shared vision to establish a practical school in Bandundu Ville
